04/10/2014 2013-2014 Series of Lectures on Astrophysics and Cosmology: science of the cosmos, science in the cosmos Lecture: " Asteroseismology: The Study of Starquakes and Its Impact on Astrophysics" Synopsis: After a general basic introduction into asteroseismology for the non-expert, the audience will be able to enjoy some cosmic symphonies caused by starquakes. Prof. Aerts will explain that the basic principles of asteroseismology are very similar to those used by Earth seismologists, and will illustrate how these principles allow to probe the interior physics of stars from their quakes. She will also discuss the recent revolution in this research field thanks to the European and American space missions CoRoT and Kepler respectively, before ending with an illustration of how seismic studies of individual stars can help us to understand cosmological aging and to probe the structure of the Milky Way.
