Reaping the benefits of improved public health, education and medical care, our nation and the world are experiencing a demographic revolution: longer lives.  On average, Americans live 30 to 40 years longer than we did 100 years ago. This lecture seeks to frame the opportunities and challenges of this unprecedented moment in human history, through the lens of one scientist's work. Dean Linda Fried, gerontologist, geriatrician and epidemiologist, is a world leader in the science of healthy aging, from the causes of frailty in older people to the development of innovative preventive approaches that support wellbeing throughout the lifespan, to enhancing the positive impacts of an aging adult population on society. Dr. Fried will explore the critical role of a great university in developing the knowledge and evidence-based institutions and practices needed to ensure that an increasing older population will be a win-win for all.
