Achim Menges, professor at the Institute for Computational Design at Stuttgart University returns to SAC this Thursday to give a new lecture. Achim Menges is the founding director of the Institute for Computational Design (since 2008). Currently he also is Visiting Professor in Architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (since 2009). He graduated with honours from the AA School of Architecture where he subsequently taught as Unit Master in Diploma School (2003-6), as Studio Master in the Emergent Technologies and Design Graduate Programme (2002-9), and as visiting professor (2009-12).
Menges' practice and research focuses on the development of integral design processes at the intersection of morphogenetic design computation, biomimetic engineering and robotic fabrication that enables a highly articulated, performative built environment. His work is based on an interdisciplinary approach with structural engineers, computer scientists, material scientists and biologists. He has published numerous books, articles and scientific papers on this work and related fields of design research. His projects and design research work has received various international awards, been published and exhibited worldwide, and form part of several renowned museum collections, among others, the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
In this lecture Achim Menges will discuss how materiality no longer remains a fixed property and passive receptor of form, but instead how it can be transformed into an active generator of design and an adaptive agent of both structural performance and architectural performativity.
