JSGS Featured Lecture Series: Innovation Policy for a Digital Age: Governments, Digital Media and Economic Development
Presented by: Ken Coates, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Regional Innovation, Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Saskatchewan campus
Governments around the world have identified digital media and digital content as key drivers for the 21st century economy. Promoting business and employment development in the field has proven difficult, however, as standard economic development strategies are not well-suited for the commercial and creative imperatives of the digital sectors. Some countries, particularly in Europe and East Asia, have invested heavily in the digital economy, with mixed results. This presentation reviews the intersection of digital media and economic development strategies and reflects on the economic trajectory of this heavily promoted sector.
