25 students graduated from the nine-month Cambridge BioMedical Careers Program at Bunker Hill Community College (Boston, MA) on May 14, 2013. Of these, nine earned the Certificate with Distinction. This means they got all A's in their classes: CHM120 "Principles of Inorganic Chemistry"; CHM121 "Principles of Organic and Biochemistry"; BIO120 "Introduction to Biotechnology"; CIT110 "Introduction to Computer"; NHP180 "Medical Terminology"; and BIO909 "Special Topics in Biology". Graduates earn a total of 19 college credits. Having this certificate qualifies them for entry-level jobs in biotech companies, hospital laboratories and research institutions. Graduates possess the following critical general laboratory skills:
o Knowledge of cGMP's, SOP's, and proper documentation
o Use of laboratory equipment - balances, micropipettes, spectrophotometers,
centrifuges, pH meters, and microscopes
o Buffer preparation by molarity and percent
o Protein quantitation -- Lowry and Bradford methods
o Gel filtration column chromatography
o Aseptic cell culture techniques
o Gel electrophoresis
o Restriction enzyme digestion and analysis
o Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
o ELISA and fundamentals of Western Blotting
o Bacterial transformation
