Hi, I'm Joel and I'm an English teacher. Today, I want to teach you something simple that might help you next time you're in a restaurant.
Let's say that you want to order something. You like everything that comes on the food, but maybe there's one thing that you want to put on yourself. So, the waitress says, "Would you like mustard on your sandwich?" You could say, "Can you put it on the side?" If something is on the side, it means it's separate from the food in a separate container. So, if your mustard is on the side, that means it's not on your sandwich. And you can put the mustard on your sandwich. That way if you just want a little bit of mustard, you can put it on.
And let's say that you want to order a salad, but you don't want them to put the dressing on the salad. You can say, "I'd like a salad please, but can you put the dressing on the side?"
Let's say that you're ordering a cup of coffee. The cashier may say, "Would you like sugar in your coffee?" You could say, "On the side." That way you can put the sugar in yourself.
