We got a request for a video about the differences between phrasal verbs and phrasal nouns, so we thought we'd make a video to help everyone understand them better. While phrasal verbs are a series of two or three words together, like "call back," phrasal nouns are usually one word, like "callback" or two words connected with a hyphen, like "Flare-up". Listen carefully to the differences in the sounds of phrasal verbs and nouns and remember that these examples may also have other meanings. Let's get started! Check Out You can check out, or borrow, a book at your local library. You can also check out, or look at, a beautiful woman. Checkout When you buy something at a store, you usually pay at the checkout counter. Build Up You can build up, or strengthen, your confidence. Buildup If you don't clean your bathtub, you will get mold buildup. Work Out I usually work out, or train and tone my muscles, at the gym. Workout I had an excellent workout today and feel great! Check Up I often check up on, or look at, my sick mother to see how she is feeling. Checkup I have a checkup tomorrow at the hospital. Cool Down I usually cool down with an iced tea in the summer. Cool-down After I go running in the morning, I need a cool-down period when I walk for a while. Cut Back I've been eating too much ice cream lately, so I've decided to cut back on, or decrease the amount of, how much ice cream I eat. Cutback The city office needs some serious spending cutbacks to save money. Drop Out/Dropout If I drop out, or quit, school, then I am a dropout. Hand Out Santa Claus will hand out, or distribute, presents at Christmas time. Handout If I am homeless and have nothing to eat, I will ask for handouts of money or free food.
