Welcome to CDL's Insights and Tips series. My name is Karen Russell. I've been apart of the CDL team for four years now. I'm a career coach with the business and today I'm here to talk to you about interview skills. They're tips I've gleaned from recruiters that I know and trust.
Most interviews start with the question "Tell me what you know about the company." Make sure you take the time before you go to interview to view the company website and research key facts about the business. Communicate an interest in the company and not just the role.
Next tip is be on time. Preparation is the key here. Find out where the interview is being held and plan your journey. You need to leave ample time for unseen problems. There might be late buses, late trains, heavy traffic and often there might not being parking nearby. I also suggest you print off maps and practice the route and arrive at least ten minutes early. This will give you time to gather your thoughts and look over you notes. If you're late for the interview you're immediately on the bad foot.
Dress well for the interview. First impressions do count. A decision will likely be made in the first ten minutes of the interview. Before you even speak the interviewer will have made some suitability for the role. Just by the way you've dressed, so just keep it smart and tidy. Clean clothing, ironed shirts or ironed blouses and clean shoes. Basic stuff but it's important.
Answer the question that is being asked. Listen really carefully to the question. It's a specific skill that the interviewer is trying to draw out of you by asking you that question. Again, preparation is the key. Prepare some specific examples that demonstrate your key responsibilities and achievements in previous roles. You don't want to sound too rehearsed though but by practising a few typical interview questions you'll be able to minimise waffling and really keep on track.
