"Pass Your IELTS Exam"
IELTS is one of the hardest English exams in the world. Not only is it constantly changing and evolving, it is
made harder and more robust every year due to lobbying by governments and businesses wanting people with
better English.
In Australia, for example, many people are required to get 8 in every band to be able to get a permanent
residency visa.
The official Cambridge site says that you need an average of a minimum of 6 months full time group class
English lessons to raise your band score by just 0.5. If you got 4.5 in reading in one exam, it could take you
over 3 years of full time study to get an 8 in reading.
How do you take a short cut?
How can you speed up the process?
What do you need to do to get that IELTS score you want faster?
There are a number of things you can do. One of these is to get a private tutor or an IELTS coach to show how you can improve your skills in the IELTS exam.
In listening they can teach you correct pronunciation so that when you hear someone you know what they're saying. If you have bad pronunciation and you think that is how a word should sound but you're actually saying it incorrectly, how are you going to recognise when someone says it correctly? A tutor can help you with your listening skills. It is also highly recommended that you do a lot of IELTS listening practice tests.
In reading they can take you through a reading test and show you how to find the answers to questions. While there are no special 'tricks' to passing the IELTS there are reading techniques like skimming, scanning, combining similar vocabulary and using inference to be able to find the answers to the questions faster. To help you acquire these skills you should do as many reading practice tests as possible before the exam. At least one a day for a month.
In writing they can show you how to write in essay format, how to write in letter format, the best way to write about charts (academic) and tips on improving your sentence construction and vocabulary level. They can also give you example sentences and vocabulary that you can include in your essays to make it easier to put together. I also recommend you get as many writing questions as possible and do them daily.
In speaking a private tutor is your best chance of passing as you'll be able to practice answering IELTS speaking test questions as well as get coaching on the best answers and the best way of answering. Your tutor will also be able to inform you if your pronunciation will mean you'll lose marks and whether you have any major grammar errors (forgetting to say 'a', 'an' and 'the', leaving off the 's', not pronouncing the final consonant of a word, forgetting to use 'ed' etc) need to be corrected.
In this video I review IELTS Practice Tests and gives some recommendations as to how to increase your band
score in a shorter time.
