Protesters and supporters of Catalan independence trapped and attacked the Spanish finance minister's car following a political rally in Barcelona.
The protesters met the minister's car before the rally with blows and by throwing gravel at it.
During the rally, the Catalan Popular Party telephoned the head of the Catalan police (Mossos), Manel Prat, to ask for riot police reinforcements, given the incidents taking place outside the building.
The protesters blocked off the end of the street with large plant pots, which forced the minister to endure an unexpected wait inside the car following the rally.
The Spanish finance minister, Cristóbal Montoro, and the leader of the Catalan Popular Party, Alicia Sánchez Camacho, who was accompanying Mr. Montoro in the car after the European election rally, are unhurt.
Catalan police have arrested one person following the incident in Vilanova I La Geltrú, south-west of Barcelona.
