In this lesson, you can learn how to approach task one of the IELTS writing exam (for academic IELTS). In question one of academic IELTS, you are given some sort of data, and you need to write a short article summarising and explaining the information. Common formats for task one are:
- Information in a table
- Charts or graphs, including line graphs, pie charts or bar graphs
- Diagrams or maps
Occasionally, questions may include a combination of these. For example, the question might ask you to compare two maps, or summarise information from two different charts.
The word count for question one is 150 words. Like all IELTS writing, this means you need to write a minimum of 150 words, or you will lose points. You should aim to write around 160-170 words, and your answer should take around 20 minutes.
To write a better answer for task one of the IELTS writing exam, you need to:
- Find patterns or trends in the information you are given
- Divide your answer into paragraphs, so that your writing has a clear, logical structure
- Balance general, big-picture ideas with more specific examples
You can see more details about these points in the lesson, as well as some common mistakes which you should try to avoid.
