Do you drive? If so, how much time do you think you spend in traffic jams every year? The answer might surprise you. Congestion is a worldwide problem, which can cause stress, pollution and lost productivity. For example, the average driver in Washington D.C. spends 68 hours a year in traffic—almost two working weeks! In this essay, I am going to examine why so many cities around the world have such serious traffic problems. I will attempt to show that traffic problems are not inevitable, and that urban planning and good public transport systems can reduce or even eliminate traffic problems.
