TRANSCRIPT:
Your boss says she has an idea that she wants to RUN BY you.
What does this mean?
Does it mean that she wants to go running with you after work?
No, no, no!
Don't keep that idea - it's wrong, wrong, all wrong!
That's not what it means to RUN something BY someone.
To RUN something BY (or RUN something PAST) someone means to tell someone something before you act on it.
For example:
He had some ideas about how the company could improve their quality control, so he RAN his ideas BY his boss.
The mother said to her children, "You have lots of good ideas for a family holiday. Let's RUN them PAST your dad and get his opinion."
Imagine RUNNING something BY someone, or RUNNING something PAST someone, in this way.
You can RUN all kinds of things PAST another person: questions, ideas for a holiday, concert plans, menus, vacation ideas, even things you are concerned about.
RUN BY is a phrasal verb
