RCSI International Careers Symposium 2012 Mr David Bouchier Hayes addresses RCSI medical students on Australian Opportunites for Medical Graduates Mr. David Bouchier-Hayes, consultant urologist and robotic surgeon at the Galway Clinic graduated from Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1991. After completing senior registrar urological training in Ireland in 2003, and being awarded an M.D. thesis, Mr. Bouchier Hayes spent three years working as a senior lecturer/consultant urologist in the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia. There he developed his interest in photoselective vaporisation prostate/laser prostatectomy (aka Greenlight® laser prostatectomy) and robotic assisted radical prostatectomy using the da Vinci robot . He was first assistant at the first robotic assisted radical prostatectomy performed in the southern hemisphere on December 3, 2003. He was one of the the first Irishman appointed as a fellow of the Australian Institute of Robotic Surgery., consultant urologist and robotic surgeon at the Galway Clinic graduated from Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1991. Mr. Bouchier Hayes's main areas of interest are in benign prostatic disease and the use of laser therapy as a surgical treatment of this. Also he was involved in pioneering the use of the da Vinci robotic surgical system for the treatment of organ confined prostate cancer and was instrumental in introducing this to the Galway clinic in 2007. This was the first robotic radical prostatectomy program established in Ireland and continues very successfully to this day . His other interests include minimally invasive and laser treatments of urinary stones, prostatitis and interstitial cystitis. He is actively involved in peer-reviewed research and, as well as having multiple publications in international journals to his name, is a reviewer for five national and international urological journals. He is also actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate examination and teaching.
