The Art of Group Theory and the Group Theory of Art.
What makes a pattern or design beautiful? In many cases, objects we find aesthetically pleasing are highly symmetrical. Group theory is one of the tools that mathematicians have used to study symmetry. This talk, for a general audience, will describe what groups are and how they can be used to answer questions and solve problems about symmetry, geometry and many other things. Along the way we'll talk about the geometer and group theorist Donald Coxeter, whose work influenced many artists, including Escher. We'll also touch on some of my own work on Coxeter groups.
