AUDIO TRANSCRIPTS Questions 1 and 2 refer to the following conversation. - This column doesn't make any sense. It shows a loss. - We included last year's figures. - No wonder. Take them out and add it up again. - OK, if you insist. But we have to finish this work soon. I plan to mail it off to the client this afternoon. Questions 3 and 4 refer to the following conversation. - Relax. I'm sure he'll be able to fix it. - If he ever gets here. We've been waiting by the door all morning. - Well, you know traffic is terrible at this time of day. When did you call him? - At nine o'clock. His secretary said he would be here before noon. - It's barely noon now according to my watch. I'm sure he'll be here any minute. Questions 5 and 6 refer to the following conversation. - The mayor has no further comment at this time. In her opinion, was the outcome of this year's negotiation as favorable to the union as it was last year? - We'll defer that question until the mayor's press conference. If you apply to the mayor's office for a press pass, you'll be able to attend it. - One more thing . . . city teachers say that the mayor's educational policies are unfair to low-income children. What does the mayor say to that? - Please, sir. I said no more questions at this time. Questions 7 and 8 refer to the following conversation - I'm sure you understand that we use a formula to arrive at the decision. - Yes, but as interest rates comedown, money should be more available, right? - Yes and no. That's true for most loans, but your application doesn't meet our minimum requirements. - Can’t you help me out? I really need this loan. - I suggest that you and your wife meet with our financial advisor. He can counsel you on the best way to manage your finances. - OK. How can I make an appointment with him? Questions 9 and 10 refer to the following conversation. Woman: He played much better than I thought he would. He beat out all the other players. Man: I know. I thought he was too inexperienced for this course, but he proved me wrong. He was able to direct all his attention to what he was doing. Woman: The final score proves his talent. His family will be very proud of his accomplishment. Man: They'll be even prouder when the club president hands him his award. Questions 11 and 12 refer to the following conversation. Man: He's been outside for almost half an hour now. Woman: So? What does he care? The meter's running, and we're paying him. Man: Yes, but it can't be all that comfortable in the cab. It's really cold out there. Woman: Well, I'm almost ready to go. And you? Man: I've been ready for hours. Hurry up and get your coat on. Your mother is expecting us to be at her house before seven o'clock, and you know how upset she'll be if we're late. Questions 13 and 14 refer to the following conversation. Woman: The color will match your walls perfectly. Man: I like it, but do you think my cat will ruin it? Woman: Probably, but what's more important? Animals or furniture? Man: It's just that I don't want to spend a lot of money on a couch just to have it all scratched up. Woman: You could call up a pet trainer to teach your cat not to scratch. A lot of people have had success with that. Man: That just means more money out of my bank account. Maybe it would be better to stay with my old couch. Questions 15 and 16 refer to the following conversation. Man: This one over here is one of her best works, in my opinion. Woman: Amazing. She has truly outdone herself. This collage has to be her best ever. Man: I'm glad you think so. We've given her a lot of support, and this is ample repayment. She has a brilliant future ahead. Woman: I understand that a number of prominent people have expressed interest in her work. Man: Yes. In fact the mayor herself is interested in buying a piece to display in city hall. Questions 17 and 18 refer to the following conversation. Woman: If we make the 8:10, we'll be home by nine o'clock. Man: We don't have a chance. It's late already, and we'll never get a taxi. Woman: Then let's walk. It's not far to the train station. I'm sure we can make it there in 15 minutes if we walk fast. Man: That's a great idea. Let's try it. We might make it in time for that train, and, anyhow, my doctor recommended that I get more exercise. Questions 19 and 20 refer to the following conversation. Man: How often does this happen? Woman: She's 10 to 15 minutes late just about every morning. Man: Please let her know that we expect employees to be on time. As her supervisor, that’s your responsibility. We have to put an end to this behavior before it becomes a bigger problem. Woman: All right. I'll speak to her about it today. Man: You really must, before the problem gets out of hand. If you let this continue, her co-workers will think that they can do the same thing. ------ CORRECT ANSWERS 1.B -2.B -3.D -4.A -5.B -6.A -7.A -8.D -9.C -10.D -11.A -12.B -13.B -14.C -15.A -16.D -17.C -18.B -19.B -20.A
