Our thoughts on our counselling session, as mandated by Health Canada for individuals going through donor insemination. The system is not so strict that every counselling session will see the same list of questions, but other questions you might get: - if you've had therapeutic relationships (whether or not for diagnosed mental illness), what did you think of it? What worked/didn't work? - have you previously tried to conceive? How did that go? - can you describe your relationship in one sentence? - how and when do you plan to tell your child where they came from? - what are you looking for in a donor (e.g. are you looking for someone who looks like a combination of the two of you?) - do your friends and family know that you are TTC? If so, how have they reacted? If not, why? - Will your workplace support you during pregnancy? Also, for those of you with mental health or other health concerns, the psychologist mentioned a great Toronto-based resource called Motherisk (http://www.motherisk.org/women/contactUs.jsp) which helps counsel mothers about the effects of medications and illness on themselves and their children in utero (and nursing). He advised they would have access to the latest research findings regarding the effects of different prescription medications on babies in utero. Great!
