Gender Differences and Brain Ageing
Gender differences in brain ageing is a complex topic, which is poorly understood. Ageing, hormones, genes and social experience all have an impact on brain health. Cognitive decline, neurodegenerative (Alzheimer’s) and neuropsychiatric diseases often coincide with reproductive ageing and are more prevalent in women than men. Given that sex hormones deplete during normal ageing, it is reasonable to hypothesize that sex hormones might play an important neuroprotective role against neurodegenerative diseases.
Professor Ishwar shows that the use of new brain imaging techniques and natural bioidentical hormones can provide valuable insights and possible cures for neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders.
