In this lesson, you can learn about the IELTS speaking exam. Many students go into the IELTS speaking exam without really knowing what will happen, or how the examiners decide your score. This is a bad idea! Understanding the structure of the exam and how your score is decided can help you to prepare.
The IELTS speaking test has three sections, and lasts around 11-14 minutes in total. The test is the same whether you are taking general IELTS or academic IELTS. The exam is supposed to be like a real-life conversation—the examiners want to see if you can communicate in a natural way. Your exam will be recorded, and examiners use the recording to determine your score.
In part one, the examiner will ask you simple questions about your life. In part two, you have to give a short speech on a topic which the examiner gives you. In part three, you discuss more complicated questions with the examiner.
Your score for the IELTS speaking test is made of four parts: fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. The scoring system is very detailed, so in order to get a better score, you need to understand exactly what you need to do. You also need to make sure you have a balance between the four skills: if you are weak in one area, it can bring your score down.
